Who this is for
Many people who move to Perth for IT and consulting work arrive with Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Wipro, HCLTech or Tech Mahindra, often on a subclass 482 Skills in Demand visa or an intra-company transfer. The first weeks are the hard part: a hotel is expensive, a lease needs references you do not have yet, and the furniture has to come from somewhere.
A room here is the middle path. You arrive to a bed, a desk, a kitchen and working internet, pay one weekly amount, and take your time deciding where in Perth you want to live long term. Minimum term is eight weeks, then it rolls on fortnight by fortnight.
Everyone is welcome to apply. The rooms are let under the WA Residential Tenancies Act and offered to any eligible applicant, whatever their background or employer. 22 Tavistock is privately owned and is not affiliated with Infosys, TCS or any other company named on this page.
What you need to apply from India
The application takes about five minutes and asks for your contact details, which room you want and your move-in date. That is all that is required. You can mention your employer and your start date if you like; it helps the owner plan, but nothing about income or references is mandatory.
- Apply online. From India or after you land. Your answers save on your phone as you go.
- Video or in-person viewing. A walk-through over video call if you are still overseas, or in person once you arrive. Bring a photo ID (passport is fine).
- Sign and move in. Sign the agreement on your phone, pay the first fortnight and the bond by bank transfer or card, and collect the key.
Bond is four weeks' rent and is lodged with the WA Bond Administrator, not held by the owner. Rent is paid fortnightly. There is no fee to apply and no agency involved.

Nicholson Road station on the Thornlie–Cockburn line is also a short bus ride away. By car the CBD is around 20 to 25 minutes outside peak.

Indian groceries, food and places of worship nearby
The Cannington, Canning Vale and Willetton area has one of Perth's larger Indian communities, so the everyday things are close: Indian grocers and spice shops, South and North Indian restaurants, a Hindu temple and a gurdwara, and cricket ovals at the weekend.
- Groceries: India Grocer on Albany Highway, Cannington (open daily to 9pm) and on Nicholson Road, Canning Vale; Lotus Indian Groceries and Spice Bazaar on High Road, Willetton.
- Eating out: 2 Fat Indians at Westfield Carousel, Udipi Krishna Vilas and Om Sweet & Curry House in Cannington, Delhi 6 and Thousand Spices in Canning Vale, Grand Indian Flavours in Riverton.
- Worship: Perth Hindu Temple, Warton Road, Canning Vale; Gurdwara Sahib of Western Australia, Shreeve Road, Canning Vale. ISKCON Perth is in Kalamunda and the BAPS mandir is in Wangara, both further afield.
- Cricket: Woodford Park on Lynwood Avenue has a wicket a few streets away; Canning Vale Cricket Club plays at Clifton Oval; Coker Park in Cannington and Willetton Reserve are close too.
- Everything else: Westfield Carousel (Coles, Woolworths, phone stores, cinema), Riverton Leisureplex pool and gym, and Bentley Hospital are each within a short drive.
Your first weeks in Perth: a short checklist
- Tax file number (TFN): apply free online with the ATO once you are in Australia and give it to your employer within 28 days of starting; it takes up to 28 days to arrive.
- Bank account: CommBank, ANZ, NAB and Westpac let you open an account online before you leave India and verify your passport and visa in a branch after landing.
- Health cover: a subclass 482 visa carries condition 8501, so you need private overseas visitor health cover; India has no reciprocal agreement with Medicare.
- Driving: you can drive on your Indian licence for up to three months after moving to WA. India is not a recognised licence country here, so converting means a theory test and a practical assessment at a WA Department of Transport centre.
- SIM card: Telstra, Optus and Vodafone have stores at Westfield Carousel; prepaid is the quickest start.
- Renting: WA law caps the bond at four weeks' rent and rent in advance at two weeks, and the bond is lodged with the Bond Administrator, which is exactly how this house works.
